19th century Japanese ceramic Shigaraki ware chawan (tea bowl) for tea ceremony with enamel decoration of 3 yuzu citrons with leaves. Shigaraki is one of the six ancient kilns of Japan with long history dating back to the medieval period. Typical Shigaraki coarse clay body with large sand particles, beautiful potting with a sublime Japanese touch of indenting the side of the bowl (between 2 citrons) by pressing the potter’s thumb into wet clay. Spiral line on the bottom of the bowl showing the way potter finished turning the piece. Superb quality absolutely charming depiction of the fruits with wonderful vibrant colors, mottled cream glaze. Stamped with potter’s seal on the body by the foot (did not photograph well). Comes with old inscribed box (two planks are missing on the inside of the cover as can be seen on photo) and wrapping cloth. Extremely pleasant feel of age, well-used, in great condition. Diameter 4 11/16 inches, height 2 7/8 inches.
