Unusual late 19th to early 20th century set of 20 different ceramic theater mask netsuke mounted on wooden board. Excellent modeling, crisp detailing, enamel highlights, slight darkening of protruding parts from wear, very nice patina. The masks are held by lengths of wire, and can be removed from the board if needed. Decorative silk cord by the bottom and another one on top for hanging. Comes with original wooden storage box with cover. Inscribed on the front SHOHI SENNIN ONKO ZO (Shohi sage, made by Onko) and stamped with 2 red paste seals - the set was made by a member of the Shimizu family producing Onko wares in Akasaka, Gifu Prefecture, most probably by Shimizu Sekisen I (1848-1927). Board size 17 1/4 X 7 1/2 inches. Average netsuke height is about 1 1/2 inches.
