19th century Chinese scholar’s soapstone seal of square section carved in the round in low relief with a scene of two scholars in discussion in a boat under a pine tree by wispy vapors, a bridge, a banana tree, another scholar observing his friends and a distant view of a temple in the mountains. Inscribed with the name of the owner on the side with the temple. The impression of the seal is shown on the first photo (image is flipped left to right to present the image as it will actually print on paper). Excellent quality carving on Shoushan soapstone with variously colored veining giving the feel of volume to the material, beautiful play of colors. The bottom is carved with 4 raised characters, red seal paste in the grooves. Great scholar’s object with understated beauty. Height 3 1/8 inches, base 1 1/4 inches square.
