Unusual 19th century lacquered netsuke of an actor in a role of shojo with fan in one hand and a ladle in the other. Shojo are mythical creatures living near the sea, and are particularly fond of sake. Wonderful face carved out of coral, superb lacquered designs of Noh theater robe. Old age lines, overall in great condition, really nice feel of age to the piece. Signed ISSAI in seal script in a rectangular reserve on the back - the artist is listed on p. 517 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. From the collection of Carl Krock. Height 1 1/2 inches.
