Early 19th century netsuke of Daikoku - one of the 7 Gods of Good Fortune, that of wealth - with a huge bag of treasures behind him and 3 boys fighting over some items from the bag, such as a fan, a scroll and a conch shell. Very strong early piece, superb smiling face, nicely captured mood of the scene. Beautiful flow to the lines of their clothes, great wear and patina, cord opening is formed by the body of the boy with fan. Signed MASATOMO in rectangular reserve on the bottom - for information on the artist see NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick, p. 734. Height 1 3/8 inches.
