Rather unusual 19th century Japanese bronze set of four miniature boxes with various engraved designs on the tops, most probably for storing incense for tea ceremony. Designs include a bird in flight above a rope with paper poem strip, chrysanthemums, pine trunk and needles and cherry branches over woven fence. Differently colored patinas, cleverly made cutouts on the sides to make lifting covers easy. Come with a storage silk pouch that has a metal clasp made as a cluster of different shells, corresponding hook is missing, so the pouch does not close. Box lengths 1 1/8 inches, heights 5/16 inches, widths 7/8 inches (the one with pine is slightly wider).
