1890s - 1910s (late Meiji - early Taisho) Japanese inkstone with recessed central grinding area and intentionally rough sides and bottom. Used for grinding of an inkstick on the surface of the stone. Very beautiful multicolored natural stone with play of gray, multiple browns, white and black,, very clever scholarly piece - well tamed central part surrounded by the wild energy of irregular shapes of the sides. Beautiful patina, wonderful object for scholar’s table, in excellent condition. Length 5 inches.
