Japanese bronze okimono (also can be used as scroll weight) of a resting ram by the metal artist Masahiko Katori (1899-1988), who was recognized in 1977 as a holder of Intangible Cultural Property - the term refers exclusively to human skills possessed by individuals which are indispensable to produce Cultural Properties. The artist graduated from the Department of Casting, Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1925, submitted a flower vase with strawberries and scrolling arabesque design to the 1925 Paris World Exposition ('Art Deco Expo') and won a bronze medal. His work is exhibited in the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo. Excellent sculptural rendition of the animal capturing its essence, beautiful brown patina. Signed MASAHIKO on the bottom, in superb condition, pleasantly heavy (weighs 1 pound 11 ounces). Comes with original kiriwood tomobako (storage box) marked with a character HITSUJI (sheep). Bronze length 5 3/8 inches.
