The painting was attributed to Shao Mi (1592-1642). Shao Mi was a Chinese landscape painter, calligrapher, and poet during the Ming Dynasty. Shao was born in Changzhou County (now part of Suzhou) in the Jiangsu province. His style name was “Seng-mi” and his sobriquets were “Gua-chou” and “Fen-tuo jushi”. Shao was known as one of the Nine Friends of Painting together with Dong Qichang, Wang Shimin, Wang Jian, Li Liufang, Yang Wencong, Zhang Xuezeng, Cheng Jiasu, and Bian Wenyu. Ink and color on gilded paper, fan leaf. This painting depicts a horse riding scene in the woods. Signed “Shao Mi”, with a signature seal of the artist. A collector’s seal in the bottom right corner, “Xiang Shan Lin Shi Jian Shan Zhai Shou Cang Shu Hua Yin (The seal of Xiang-shan Lin Family’s Collection)”. Another collector’s seal in the bottom left corner, “Xi Chou Shen Ding (Reviewed by Xi-chou)”. The painting was collected by Gu Xi-chou (1585-1646), a scholar and an official worked at the Ministry of Rites during the Ming Dynasty. Excellent condition.
