Featuring a superb antique Japanese Sumida Gawa mug/cup with sage and snail. The sage, standing on a rock, is holding a book in one hand with blue writing. He is looking down at the snail, perhaps there is a Japanese story or symbolism behind this motif. The expression on his face is superb, as is all of the detail and workmanship. The dripping brown and gray glazes are wonderful on the handle, the interior and around the top outside border. The workmanship is among the best I have handled. The condition is excellent. I can find no chips, cracks, damages, restorations whatsoever, which is amazing on a piece like this. Usually, there is some damage, or repair. Signed on reverse in square with blue characters. Dimensions: height, 5", base width, 3.25", with handle 5" wide. Cup opening around 3". Dates to the early 20th century. Satisfaction guaranteed or money back providing item returned in sent condition, within 3 days of receipt, and the way it was packed/shipped if possible.
