James Dexter Havens(1900-1960)is one of the best known graphic artists of America and won national recognition. He had an infinite capacity for taking pains which is a well known definition of genius. His keen artistic sense, his love of nature and the whimsical humor which is one of his distinguishing characteristics, brought him well deserved success. He had commissions to create the membership print for the Prairie Print Makers, the Woodcut Society of New York and the American Color Print Society. He was an associate member of the National Academy. His work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the Brooklyn Museum. and many others. There are many entries on the internet about this great artist and his works. This wonderful print, entitled Barrow-Fall, is beautifully rendered with falling leaves floating in an old wheelbarrow full of water which also reflects the trees, 3 sparrows flying or perched around the wheel barrow, all amidst a fall color landscape scene with trees in the background. The fall colors definitely depict a mood and seem to predict the coming winter season. This is one of his best prints in my opinion. It measures 13 1/2" x 10 1/4" with the entire border. The scene itself measures 10"x 8"/. With the acid free mat which is all ready for framing, it measures about 15 1/2" x 14". It is signed Barrow-Fall, No. 3- 39/60 and James D. Havens, A.N.A., 1953. Excellent condition. No foxing or problems. Return privilege, providing item returned within 3 days of receipt, in sent condition.
