This is a large and beautiful Song dynasty meiping or plum vase of baluster shape, the sides rising upwards from a slightly recessed base, curving in towards the stepped shoulder and surmounted by a short straight neck with what looks like a double ring. The body of the vase is luted together in two equal half. The upper half has a darker greenish-gray, while the lower half has slightly greenish tinge colour (picture 1). The picture no. 3 shows where the luting of the two half comes together, where the brown colour fault line is.
The whole vase is incised with a freely carved design of lotus scrolling flowers and foliage, with combed detail on the petals and leaves. There are a total of 6 large lotus flowers on the vase. Three flowers on the upper half of the body and three on the lower half of the body. The vase is also covered with a thin layer of transparent glaze of pale greenish hue, leaving only the recessed base unglazed, exposing the orange colour earth ware body underneath and has about 5 brownish firing spur marks on the rim of the base. The vase is more to the greenish-gray hue than greenish colour as shown in the picture.
There is no repair or restoration. Some firing faults and fault line, expected degradation, chips & minor losses and abrasions. There is a visible minor firing chips as shown in picture 1. It is a brownish spot to the right and mid way between the luted parted of the body.
The measurement of the Song dynasty meiping vase : Height 33.6cm and the Width 22.6cm.
