This is a blue and white brush rest for a scholar study. The brush rest is manufactured in the likeness of blue and white wares on which Arabic and Persian inscriptions appear during the reign of emperor Cheng-Te, Ming dynasty. The painting is like a scroll work know as the “Muhammadan scrolls” with inter-twining foliage.

An Arabic inscription is found on both sides of the brush rest, in the centre of the brush rest, in a diamond shape medallion. The inscription is probably the word “Allah” on it. Painter who are unfamiliar with the Arabic script probably copy the inscription. Although the brush rest has the Ming reign mark of Xuande, it is dated between early to mid Ching dynasty.

There are no repairs or restoration. Some firing faults, pin holes and minor abrasion and slight shrinkage in some parts. Otherwise the brush holder is in good condition.

The measurement of the brush rest: Height is 8.7, Length is 15 cm and the Width is 1.4cm
