This splendid oil painting on canvas is of a somber landscape setting with looming dark storm clouds, with a male figure wearing a long red coat and a dog and female figure in the foreground, while in the background is a cluster of trees with a female figure and dogs under the trees. It is in a beautifully carved gilt wood frame that is of the period.

In the early days he worked at the Louvre as a restorer of Flemish and Dutch paintings. It is obvious when you study his body of work that Michel was inspired by the Dutch painters such as Rembrandt, Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema. He would paint and sketch out in the countryside around Paris capturing the rural landscapes, with people, which often included stormy skies. His work is a precursor to the Barbizon School.
