The finely painted oil on canvas is of a pastoral fall scene by the prolific American artist Paul Turner) Sargent (1890-1946). Sargent’s early style of academic realism, characterized by heavy paint application in subdued colors, eventually gave way to a more Impressionistic style. Though sometimes thought of as a Midwestern Impressionist, Sargent never considered himself so, and was more interested with expressionism rather than the modernist theory of color and light that so concerned the Impressionists. In the 1920s he also painted in Los Angeles and established a second home there. Signed in Paul T Sargent in lower right-hand corner. The mystical oil painting is of a young woman in a white dress kneeling, with beautiful large butterfly wings, and the scene is expressing her transformation. Oil in canvas - Size: 38" x 52" (unframed) (96.5 x 132.1 cm) Each of us is like a grain of sand in the vast universe. Life seems insignificant, unpredictable and fleeting at times. But on the other hand, after much hardship and pain, life sometimes experience incredible transformation and enlightenment. We break free and grow wings of hope. Painting Butterfly Wings captures this moment of transformation, the moment the butterfly break free from the cocoon. The girl's face reflects this moment of breaking free she looks a little bit unsure and sad, maybe because of all the hardship she had to go through - we all know how long it takes for us (sometimes a life time) to get there and the pain we have to go through. But she also looks hopeful - it is her moment to shine in life, however brief it is - made even more breath-taking and deeply meaningful because of it. It also makes us cherish a moment like this more, learn to appreciate each enlightening moment in life, full of hope, nourish the wings of our heart and spirit - knowing how frail life and human spirit can be - waiting to spread them and soar into the unlimited sky under the sun¡ - Wang Niandong

This masterfully painted scene of a delicate young women lying on the floor with beautiful, colorful butterflies hovering near her. The simple white dress with the finely painted creases portrays an innocence and purity. Oil on canvas – Size: 49” x 61” (framed) 37 x 48” (unframed) (124.5 x 154.9 cm) A butterfly symbolizes freedom and beauty, born from a cocoon and ugliness; it symbolizes death and rebirth; body and soul; reality and dreams - The most significant symbol of a butterfly is the transformation: The ugly caterpillar changes from a cocoon and out of the cocoon breaks free the most beautiful, frail and dream-like creature! - This is the most magical transformation in life and of life. The caterpillar’s crude body symbolizes the real life; the butterfly’s lithe colored wings symbolize the spirit world. The real life is not always beautiful, but the spirit world is. - But the spirit can also be frail, like the butterfly and its wings. The spirit world carries an unconventional, sensitive and frail disposition. We need to carefully nurture and attend to it constantly. We need to protect it at times. We all know a man is never defeated unless his spirit is broken. - One of the most significant stories told by the founder of Taoism, Zhuangzi is the “Dream of Butterfly”. He dreamt of turning into a butterfly in his dream, when he woke up, he could not decide whether he was really a butterfly turned into a man or a man turned into a butterfly. How did he know his dream was not reality and his reality was not a dream? This is one of the most profound and disturbing questions a man could ask himself.
