This is an excellent example of a so-called French-type Papier Mache lady. She has glass eyes and an open mouth with teeth. Her shoulderhead has no repairs or repaint. Her French kid body is in superb condition. She is wearing a wonderful antique four-piece wool walking suit, and she retains her original wig. These shoulderheads were actually made in Germany, then sold to French doll manufacturers who placed them on French bodies, dressed them and finally marketed them as a French product...

This is a nice example of a so-called French-type Papier Mache lady in her original clothes, circa 1840’s. The Papier Mache heads were made by German firms and supplied to the French, who placed them on French kid bodies, dressed them, and marketed them. This is a 9" key wind Papier Mache doll called an autoperipatetikos. These toys are found with a variety of heads, but this is the first one I have ever seen with a PAPIER MACHE HEAD and INSET GLASS EYES. She carries an 1862 patent date. She is in working condition, retains her key, and her clothing could be original. When wound, she moves her two brass boots and appears to walk. This is a classic early American clockwork toy by Althof Bergmann in working condition. Overall size is 8" tall and 11" long.

Doll: The doll has a PRESSED LINEN head from the Hawkins patent of 1869. The toy is attributed to Althof Bergmann.
