Iconic ornament worn by the people of West Sumba island in eastern Indonesia. This particular mamuli type is called "pewisie", the motifs at the bottom are stylized horse heads. Silver tested. Original woodblock print by Clifton Karhu (1927 - 2007) titled “To†depicting a head of a tiger. The print is pencil-signed, titled, dated 71 and numbered 13/100 at the bottom of the circular image. A complete set of four Japanese woodblock prints in the original presentation folder by Sadanobu III Hasegawa (1881-1963), published around 1950 by Uchida. Carefully printed with embossing and shomen-zuri, laid down at upper corners. Condition: fine, only paper mats with few short tears. Dimension: sheet: 27.8 cm x 21 cm, image: 25.7 cm x 19.3 cm, folder: 35.5 cm x 26.2 cm.

These eight wayang kulit shadow puppets, called in Bali "ringgits", were bought from a dalang (shadow artist) in Bali around 1960 and had then already a certain age. In a wayang kulit performance, the puppet figures are mostly rear-projected on a linen screen. These puppets are made from rather thick pergament (cowhide) and painted in natural colors, many of them are inscribed with their name on the wooden sticks...

The back of the patinated bronze head with the two initials "V.N." standing for Vietnam, work attributed to the Vietnamese artist Nguyen Thanh Le (1919-2003). Fixed on the original black painted wooden base...
