A very rare liturgical embroidery dating to the 17th century or earlier. A cope hood in shield-form with a central applied panel depicting the Archangel Michael. He is standing in complete armour holding a sword and about to strike a tailed demon. Ruby silk ground with couched gold and silver threads and appliqued arabesques in yellow silk, the medaillon and lining in linen. Condition: clean. Wear, slits, mendings and losses.
