Two Chinese miniature carved wooden groups depicting two men playing the Chinese Chess "xiangqi" and a teacher sitting at a table with scholar utensils, listening to his recitating diciple. Made in the Tushanwan Workshop in Xujiahui, an orphanage opened 1864 by French Jesuit priests near Shanghai. Hosting an art school, producing wood-carving, stone sculpture, silversmith, embroidery and painting. Please refer to the book (last photo) "Scènes de la vie en Chine. Les figurines de bois de T'ou Sè Wè" by Christian Henriot and Ivan Macaux in French and Chinese ISBN 9782849903735. Book not included. Please refer to the illustrations on page 254-55 and 216-217. Condition: bases with residue of former mounting, small area with glue residue. Dimension: c. 5.8 cm & 6.2 cm high and 7.5 cm & 5.6 cm long.
