Stone lantern in the ikekomi-gata style sculpted in four parts from granite. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650. Very minor old loss. Variegated lichen accumulation.

Height: 93 cm

Sculpted from a high-quality granite, with the formal hexagonality of the upper three parts relaxing into the tapered swell of the cylindrical pedestal, a diminutive ikekomi-gata lantern with immense charm. (Ikekomi-gata lanterns, which by design have no foundation stone, are displayed by inserting the pedestal directly into the ground or, as the case may be, placing the pedestal directly upon the ground.) On each of the six sides of the central dais appears a diamond-shaped motif (Jp. hishi), most likely the family crest of the original owner.

A complete, fully intact four-part ensemble, with significant age and in excellent condition.
