Seated En-no-Gyouja figurally sculpted from tuff, an igneous stone composed primarily of volcanic ash. Mid-Edo Period ca. 1700. Very minor old loss. Variegated lichen accumulation overall.

Height: 61 cm
Width: 34 cm
Depth: 27 cm

En-no-Gyouja, a 7th-century diviner and mountain ascetic, is exalted as the founder of shugendou, a syncretic religious cult based on animistic mountain worship and Esoteric Buddhist doctrine and ritual. Stone depictions of En-no-Gyouja are exceedingly uncommon. This example boasts good size, excellent condition, and significant age. Highly collectible.
