Tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) sculpted from a salmon-hued granite. Early-Edo Period ca. 1650, possibly earlier. Very minor old loss. Light lichen accumulation.

Height: 46 cm
Width: 40 cm
Depth: 35 cm
Packaged weight: approx. 70 kg.

Tanuki depictions typically are characterized by a daunting display of testicular fortitude, assuming, that is, the beast in question is no older than mid-Edo Period ca. 1750. In the case of earlier examples, tanuki typically show very little or, as in the present example, nothing at all gonad-wise. So, while this piece at a glance might seem to be a Ms. Tanuki, it is in fact simply a very old Tanuki. Highly collectible.
