Head of a Buddha sculpted in wood using the warikubi technique and finished in lacquer, gilt, and pigment, with eyes of inset crystal. Kamakura Period ca. 1250. Old loss to the right earlobe and to the stylized rahotsu hair curls above both ears as well as old loss to the refinished lacquer and gilt.

Overall height, including custom-made acrylic display stand: 24 cm
Height of head only: 20.8 cm
Width: 11.4 cm

This head was attached originally to a Buddha with a height of more than one meter (if a standing piece) or 65 cm (if a seated piece).

A thoroughly classic example of Kamakura-Period Buddhist sculpture. Highly collectible.
