Guest Book

A matched pair of decorative plaques incorporating a stylized peony (Jp. botan) motif, each plaque sculpted from a single piece of zelkova (Jp. keyaki), a relatively hard, heavy wood, and left unfinished. Early-Edo period ca. 1650. Minor old edge loss, cracking, and discreet repairs.

Diameter of each plaque: 32 cm
Depth: 5 cm

Sculpted with a notably robust elegance and in excellent condition despite significant age, this pair of decorative plaques, originally displayed in a Japanese temple or shrine, was de-accessioned from the holdings of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis.
