Standing guardian figure, originally part of a full set of Junishinsho (12 Heavenly Guardians, a.k.a., Divine Generals) traditionally deployed in Japanese Buddhist temples as fierce protectors of Yakushi Nyorai (Healing Buddha). Muromachi Period ca. 1500. Ichiboku-zukuri single-block wooden construction, the rustic plinth not original to the figure. Old repairs, insect damage, traces of polychrome.
Height, including plinth: 48.3 cm
Height of figure only: 39.9 cm
A jauntily sinister example of provincial work. Uncommon.
