This delightful antique embroidery shows a lady and a gentleman in 19th century garb, enjoying a stroll beside graceful garden gates.
Although the subject is Victorian, the colors are pure Deco: sophisticated red and black on a ground of pearly beige. Measuring about 6 x 6 inches, the picture is in superb condition, attached by original tape that looks like marbled paper to its glass, mat, backing board and felt. There's no hanging hardware, so it's been displayed in the past on an easel stand or propped on a shelf.
This is one of three marvelous Art Deco embroideries we found in England, the others being of a then-modern subject (the soda fountain). All came from the same estate, so most likely the same hand.
