Rare blue and white Chinese plate depicting Guangzhou or Canton as it presented itself c 1770-90 to the crew of the East Indiamen nearing the harbour of this great city, where they were to load their ships with exquisite porcelain for use in other parts of the world. The five storeys Pagoda, the Guang Minaret and the Six Banyan Trees Temple are all to be seen within the city walls, all meticulously painted in under glaze blue. Made around 1780 this plate is near the breakthrough of the new European printing technology, pressing the Chinese porcelain painters to new tours de force, as seen in this plate. Diameter "9 ½ / 24.2 cm. Condition: star crack and two nicks to the rim (cf. pics).
