A plaster of Paris sculpture of St. John the Baptist as a child, sleeping. The boy dressed in camel skin is leaning on a rock, cross in hand and a lamb at his feet. France, mid-19th century, with nice patina and traces of a light blue colouring. Plaster of Paris was a gypsum or chalk mixture used for architectural and art purposes from the beginning of the 19th century and small sculptures, especially with religious themes, were widely exported. Height "3 ½/ 9 cm and width "3 1/3 / 8.5 cm. Condition: fine.
