Interesting French plate, transfer printed in black with a scene from the Bouffes Parisiens playhouse. The motif copies a drawing by Ch. Hamlet for the Charivari or some other satirical journal. The back of the plate reveals the name of the play: La Quenouille de Verre (the glass distaff) and some lines apparently well known to the Parisian audience of the 1870's. Cf. page 92 in A-M Mari├źn-Dugardin, Fa├»ences fines, Brussels 1975. Made by Creil & Montereau with mark for the Barbluet & Cie period (1877-84). Diameter "8/ 20,5 cm. Condition: small rim chips, one at 7 and one at 11 o'clock (please see photos).
