This brush-pot of scholar's item is decorated in relief with carved lacquer.
In the technique of embossed lacquer or Choshitsu, firstly lacquer is applied many times to make lacquer layer. Secondly, patterns are carved in to relief with chisel.

Japanese kinma chaire (tea container) by Bunkido II, Fujikawa Ransai (1840 - 1915).
Kinma is a lacquer technique in which patterns are engraved on ground lacquer and filled in with color lacquers, lacquered again and polished for gloss. The base itself is made by Rantai technique, woven bamboo strips substrate into shapes and coated with lacquer.
