Sixteen outstanding disciples of buddha are called Jyuroku (sixteen) Rakan, the theme of Zen Buddhism painting.
Rakan, abbreviation of arakan (arhat), is a respectable ascetic monk.
Signed artist name "...Chokunyu Koji..." and dating Japanese traditional era name "Kaei Kinoe Tora (1854) summer".

Painted with ink and color on silk.
Measurements about : 71 1/4" x 19 1/4" (181cm x 49cm),
Painted area : 38 5/8" x 14 3/8" (98cm x 36.5cm).

The painting is in good condition with minor marks.
Old wooden box is broken.
Tanomura Chokunyu (1814-1907), scholar artist in Meiji era.
