Rare George II memento mori ring, featuring a scrolled gold band enameled in black and inscribed in gold letters, set with a painted skull under a square cut rock crystal, with rose cut diamond shoulders set in silver. Classic scallop shell reverse. Inscription on the band reads: “WALT: WILLIAMSON. OB: 11: MAR: 1735. AET 53”. Tests strong at 18K. Memento mori means “Remember that you will die”; these early Georgian rings continued a tradition dating from the Renaissance, when skulls and skeletons reminded the wearer of their own mortality. Condition is very good; minor wear to enamel. Ring size 7 1/2.
