A wonderful portrait miniature of a gentleman, in watercolor on ivory, signed (“W. J. Baer”) by the artist and dated 1906. William Jacob Baer, a key figure in the American portrait miniature revival, was born in 1860 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied in Munich in the early 1880’s and was the first president of the Society of Painters in Miniature in New York. The sitter is an imposing gentleman, sporting spectacles, a beard and dark gray coat. Frame tests 14k gold. Excellent condition; slight scuffing to reverse of frame. Measures 3 ¾” by 3”.
