A Very Rare Korean Iron Portable Hand-Carrying Lantern(照足燈-조족등)-19th C:
Korea, Joseon dynasty, 19th century.
***This types of iron portable lanterns(照足燈) are extremely scarce but oiled paper lanterns
which never been published in museum, private collections or in auctions as my best knowledge.
Made with iron in the shape of lotus hexagonal lower body, and cylindrical iron hand carrying
bar with a folding curtain shape floral decoration. Inside, the candle is supported by a revolving clamp that allows the candle to remain in up-right, irrespective of the direction the lantern swings.
It’s in fair condition with its aged rust and patina (some body panel loosened but easily can fix it), it measures 14” h x 9” d. (35cm x 23cm) respectably.
***An almost identical lantern (照足燈) but a paper lantern sold at
K-Auction, 12/16/2014, lot #189
