This is a fragment of kosode with embroideries. Kosode is a woman's kimono till Edo period, a predecessor of a modern kimono. Kosode literally means "small sleeve" but it actually means sleeves with small wrists opening, on the other hand, sleeves with wide openings are called hirosode. This is a piece of Narumi-kongata cloth which is hand-spun and natural indigo-dyed. The body part is made of silk crepe with two kinds of itajime patterns and dyed with benibana ( safflower ).
