This is a fukusa, the gift cover. Fukusa is used to cover or to wrap a gift. It has gorgeous embroidery whose motifs are pheonix and paulownia. This is a sakiori sodenashi ( vest ). Sakiori is a textile woven of shreds for wefts which are torn from old kimono, furoshiki, futon cover and so on. This is a costume for Bunraku which is also called Ningyo Joruri. Bunraku is a form of puppet theater which came to flourish among common people in the 18th century.
