This is a sakiori sodenashi ( vest ). Sakiori is a textile woven of shreds for wefts which are torn from old kimono, furoshiki, futon cover and so on. This sodenashi is made of natural indigo dyed cotton shreds for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It is heavily used, so it has wear and rips on the piping. Han-juban (short under kimono) which is made of several kinds of silk crepe, katazome (stencil-dye) and plain. All the pieces are recycled from used kimonos and beautifully remade into the han-juban. The silk crepe pieces are called "Edo chirimen" which are high quality soft silk crepe and dyed with vegetable dyes. Generally in good condition but has some dirt in the removable white collar. Hagi-isho juban made of many kinds of recycled silk cloth which are: silk crepe with katazome, shibori, plain silk, stripes and checks woven of wild silk. The dyes are all vegetable and the lining is indigo dyed pongee silk which has white fossil silk inside coming out. Han-juban made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with benibana (safflower). The dye technique is Beni-itajime which is board-clamp dye. The cloth is folded in 8 layers between two boards which are pattern carved and generally about 12 boards are used to dye about 22m length of cloth. Beni-itajime was mostly dyed in Kyoto until the end of Edo period but it was practiced in other places later. In excellent condition. The second half of the 19th century. 64cm x 72cm

A small bag made of deer skin with shibori (tie-dye) pattern. The brown color is dyed with the technique called "fusube-gawa". The deer skin is smoked with burning rice straws and gets brown color.
