It is originated in the dyeing of kamishimo, a top and a bottom worn by feudal lords (samurai) during the Edo period. This kind of yose-gire juban was worn at the Bon Dance in Nishimonai in Akita prefecture. In good condition except for rips in the lining and wear in the both wrists. Carp streamer (koi-nobor) made of cotton with hand-drawn tsutsugaki design which is magoi, black carp. Koi-nobori is flown on the Boy's Festival (or Child's Festival) on May 5th. According to the old Chinese legend, carp became dragons while they swim up waterfalls so that they are the symbol of strength and success. 20th century.
