This is a juban ( under kimono ) made of a few kinds of silk, one is pongee silk with beni itajime shibori ( board-clamped dyeing with safflower ). The silk crepe and the pongee silk with katazome are used for the collar and the hem. In good condition except for the moth bites in the hem which has thick cotton lining. The both sleeves are lost. The last photo shows how to dye beni itajime-zome in old days. The latter half of the 19th century. 62cm x 145cm

Cotton hanten worn at the festival in Sakata city in Yamagata Pref. It has 6 "tomoe-mon", triskelions in the back as well as in the front. It is made of hand-spun cotton and has beautiful lining with katazome (stencil-dyeing) which is also hand-spun cotton. Heavily used and has a reinforcement patch on the right shoulder for carrying a portable shrine (mikoshi). Also it has several sparkled stains in the lower back. Carpenter's "sumi-tsubo ( ink liner )" made of wood and has an ink pot and a wheel. It is used by a carpenter when he draws a line on a lumber. One of the end of the string is pinned, stretched and snapped so that the line is drawn. It has been commonly used till mid 20th century. Red ink was used for this one. Tobacco case with wood netsuke. It is made of deer skin with letters and a crest which are dyed with the technique called "fusube-gawa". The deer skin is smoked with burning rice straws and gets brown color. Fusube-gawa is used for armors or wallets in Edo period. It has carved wooden netsuke.
