Buddhist altar cloth made of navy blue silk satin with checker pattern. The wefts are threads made of very thin strips of handmade paper pasted with silver foil. The original silver color changed from aging. The lining is made of hand-spun cotton in the upper part and hand-plied hemp in the lower part. This is a kome-bukuro ( rice bag ) made of pieces of silk crepe with katazome ( stencil-dyeing ), shibori ( tie-dyeing ) and hand-painting. Kome-bukuro was used when people exchanged rice or beans as a gift, or donated them to a shrine or a temple till early Showa period ( ca 1940s ). Han-juban made of several kinds of silk, such as old Oshima-tsumugi with fine kasuri pattern from Amami-Oshima in Okinawa (old name, Ryukyu) Islands (body part), silk crepe with stripes, indigo dyed pongee silk and figured silk for lining. It has silk crepe collar with embroidery. In excellent condition but Oshima-tsumugi is not so strong for remake as it is mud-dye and iron is used for dye mordant.
