It has about a dozen asa (hemp and ramie) fragments and others are mostly hand-spun cotton. They are dyed with vegetable indigo and pigments. Old Kumejima tsumugi (pongee silk) kimono from Kumejima, one of the Okinawa Islands. The features of Kumejima tsumugi are that vegetable and mud dye from the island, and also hand-woven. It is said that it has been woven from late 15th century. This kimono has thinly padded cotton so that it is possibly from colder region in mainland Japan. The lining is white and black cotton and thin white wool muslin inside the wrists. In excellent condition. Meiji period (1868~1912) 120cm x 140cm

Han-gappa (or dochu-gi) made of kudzu fiber for wefts and cotton for warps, all vegetable indigo dyed. The collar is made of imported wool. The fasteners made of spiral cord show it was made in Tenpo in late Edo period (1831~1845) according to the "Kinsei Fuzoku-shi" written by Kitagawa Morisada beginning from 1837 to 1867.
