Echigo Katakai shibori cotton cloth which is traditional tie-dye, one kind of Nui-shibori, made in Ojiya in Niigata Pref. Dyed with vegetable indigo. It has rather thick texture. In excellent condition but about 160cm from one end of cloth has indigo faded part from long time storage, however the left part has no damage. The second half of the 20th century. 37cm x 13m68cm

A pair of "Ashimoto andon (foot lantern)" made of wood, bamboo and washi (Japanese handmade paper). The wood frame is painted with "Tame-nuri" which is one of techniques of urushi. Clear urushi is painted on red urushi. The paper is replaced from shoji-gami (white paper for a screen) to recycled washi which was a record book of a merchant in late Edo period. Woman's katsugi or kazuki (head veil) made of thin plain weave silk with beautiful katazome (stencil-resist-dye) whose pattern is traditional "Matsukawa-bishi" with round pattern of Onaga-dori (one kind of rooster). Katsugi was worn by a woman when she went out. The neck part is lowered in front for easier wearing on the head. Katsugi with this zigzag pattern is called "Gosho katsugi", worn by a court noble woman. In good condition but has one rip in the top head part (5mm) and some tiny holes. ...
