Woman's kimono with "Kogin-sashi" which is embroidery with white cotton thread on indigo dyed hemp. It was made in "Tsugaru" region, now the west part of Aomori prefecture in Tohoku district. This embroidery pattern is named "Kawari yotsu mameko" which means arranged 4 beans. There are nearly 30 patterns of kogin-sashi. It has folded sleeves that means it had long sleeves and worn for special occasion, and then worn for everyday wear with folded sleeves...

This is a suo kamishimo ( top and bottom which were a formal kimono for samurai in Edo period ). The occasion when this suo kamishimo was worn is not clear ( ceremony or stage ). This suo kamishimo is made by hand-plied and hand-woven asa ( hemp ) cloth with bold tatewaku pattern which is katazome ( stencil-dyeing ). This is a noren which is made of hand-woven cloth, asa ( hemp ) threads for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It has "Genji-guruma" crest and bold tsutsugaki auspicious motifs such as bamboo, pine tree and plum tree blossoms. These motifs are rather common, but the hand-painting is very lively and strong. Tsutsugaki is freehand-painting using rice paste as resist. It is probably not for a shop but one of bridal goods...

Cotton Kurume kasuri futonji with a castle motif. Kurume in Fukuoka Pref. in Kyushu has been one of the main product places of indigo dyed cotton kasuri since late Edo period (early 19th century). It is made of hand-spun cotton that means probably it was made before Meiji 15 (1882) and vegetable indigo dyed. In excellent condition except for minor brown stains only in the back. kayaku-ire (flask, gunpowder case) made of wood with rare and beautiful urushi which was made in Tsugaru in Aomori prefecture. It is Tsugaru-nuri and a half is imitating "kaba-zaiku" which is handcraft of cherry bark and the other is "kara-nuri" which has tens of layers of urushi and it sometimes takes more than 6 months to finish.
