This is a costume for Bunraku which is also called Ningyo Joruri. Bunraku is a form of puppet theater which came to flourish among common people in the 18th century. This costume is made of silk crepe with embroidery and hand-spun cotton wa-sarasa in the lining, the both are from Edo period, however some cloths are replaced with much younger ones. It has a hole for a head in the top part and holes for hands in the sleeves. It has wear, rips and mending patches. 83cm x 102cm 32.7" x 40"

This is an Omi-kasuri child's summer kimono. Omi-kasuri is a fabric woven of hemp and produced in Omi region in Shiga prefecture near kyoto. It is hand woven kasuri ( warp and weft ) and dyed with natural indigo. In excellent condition except for a few stains in the front body and a small hole and rifts in the neck. This is a beautiful andon( lantern ) which is made of wood and coated with brown urushi ( japanese lacquer ). The light source was oil or a candle in old days, but a light bulb is replaced for this one. You can see the prominent craftsmanship of wood, especially in the round cover. In excellent condition. This is a jishiro ( white ground ) katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) which is made of hand-spun and hand-woven cotton. It is dyed with natural indigo. The diagonal lines look like shibori technique, however it is katazome and small pattern in the sleeves is also katazome. Benibana was cultivated in Shonai region in old days in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district, however it is mainly imported from abroad now. This is a juban ( under kimono ) made of a few kinds of silk, one is pongee silk with beni itajime shibori ( board-clamped dyeing with safflower ). The silk crepe and the pongee silk with katazome are used for the collar and the hem. In good condition except for the moth bites in the hem which has thick cotton lining. The both sleeves are lost.
