Large nobori, vertical banner post on the Tango-no-sekku (the Boy's Festival ) on May 5th which is for wishing each boy in the family grow up healthy and strong. This one has a motif of old tale "Ushiwaka-maru and Benkei". Benkei used to be a Buddhist soldier but was ousted from the temple because he was very rowdy. Wa-sarasa futonji made of cotton and dyed with pigments. Wa-sarasa is Japanese calico which is first made in Edo period immitating calico from abroad and stencil-resit dye or woodblock print. Rare item. A pair of Hatasashimono (battle flags) made of asa, hemp (left) and plain weave silk (right) with gold painted (kindei) washi sun design. Hatasashimono was used after Sengoku period (late 15th to Late 16th century) to show the samurai's presence, affiliation and class of position. Cotton Kurume kasuri futonji with a ship motif. Kurume in Fukuoka Pref. in Kyushu has been one of the main product places of indigo dyed cotton kasuri since late Edo period (early 19th century). It is made of hand-spun cotton that means probably it was made before Meiji 15 (1882) and natural indigo dyed.
