This is a wooden large size kanban (shop sign) of "ryo-gae-ya". Ryo-gae means "exchange" and ryo-gae-ya did banking business, too. Same kanji letters "ryo-gae" are engraved in both sides. This is a beautiful andon( lantern ) which is made of wood and coated with brown urushi ( japanese lacquer ). The light source was oil or a candle in old days, but a light bulb is replaced for this one. You can see the prominent craftsmanship of wood, especially in the round cover. In excellent condition.
