This is a set of woman's tobacco case and pipe case which are made of deer skin and has fine katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) komon pattern. The motif is pine needle. It has beautiful clasp of green bean motif which shows prominent craftsmanship in this age. The set also has a pipe, but it seems that it is not an original one as it is shorter than the case. 19th century. In good condition except for some patina. This is a noren which is made of hand-woven cloth, asa ( hemp ) threads for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It has "Genji-guruma" crest and bold tsutsugaki auspicious motifs such as bamboo, pine tree and plum tree blossoms. These motifs are rather common, but the hand-painting is very lively and strong. Tsutsugaki is freehand-painting using rice paste as resist. It is probably not for a shop but one of bridal goods...

This is hagi-isho juban ( under kimono ) made of many kinds of pieces of cloth such as silk crepe, pongee silk, wool muslin, cotton flannel, figured silk satin and so on. The techniques are: tie-dyeing, katazome ( stencil-dyeing ), Yuzen-zome ( hand-painted using rice paste as resist ). This is a beautiful andon( lantern ) which is made of wood and coated with brown urushi ( japanese lacquer ). The light source was oil or a candle in old days, but a light bulb is replaced for this one. You can see the prominent craftsmanship of wood, especially in the round cover. In excellent condition. This is a sakiori sodenashi ( vest ). Sakiori is a textile woven of shreds for wefts which are torn from old kimono, furoshiki, futon cover and so on. This sodenashi is made of natural indigo dyed cotton shreds for wefts and cotton threads for warps. It is heavily used, so it has wear and rips on the piping. This is a jishiro ( white ground ) katazome ( stencil-dyeing ) which is made of hand-spun and hand-woven cotton. It is dyed with natural indigo. The diagonal lines look like shibori technique, however it is katazome and small pattern in the sleeves is also katazome. This is a fragment of Edo kosode ( literal meaning is small sleeves ) kimono which is silk crepe with beautiful embroideries. the ground silk crepe as well as embroidery threads are dyed with vegetable dyes. This kosode kimono was worn by a woman in high ranking family. The motifs of the embroideries are chrysanthemums and a sparrow. The ground silk crepe is weak from aging. This is a dochu-gi ( coat ) made of kudzu-fu ( gross cloth ) which is hand woven of kudzu fibers for wefts and cotton threads for warps. Kudzu-fu was mostly produced in Kakegawa in Shizuoka prefecture in late Edo. Dochu-gi is a coat for outdoor or travel and kudzu-fu one was worn in summer.
