The body part is indigo-dyed crepe with free-hand drawing with white line, which is called "shiro-age" It is one of the techniques of Yuzen-zome and the line is paste-resist dyeing. It has some embroideries with gold and silk threads. The sleeves are made of silk crepe with shibori (tie-dyeing) and plain. Hagi-isho juban made of many kinds of recycled silk cloth which are: silk crepe with katazome, shibori, plain silk, stripes and checks woven of wild silk. The dyes are all vegetable and the lining is indigo dyed pongee silk which has white fossil silk inside coming out. It used to be the man's kimono, unseamed and washed (toki-mono). Cotton girl's juban (under kimono) for furisode (formal kimono) with katazome pattern. It is called beni-itajime which is one kind of board-clamped dyeing with benibana (safflower). Benibana was very precious in old days and it was mainly grown in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture. The last photo shows the process of beni-itajime in old days (Reference source: Yomigaeru Maboroshino Senshoku, published by Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo). Meiji period (1868~1912)...
