Hanten, called "suzu-kake" worn by a Shugen-sha or Yamabushi who practiced Shugendo. Shugendo is the Japanese unique religion combining Buddhism, Shintoism, and worship of nature (mountains). A practioner (shugen-sha) trained himself in the holy mountains that is ascetic and very painstaking. This one is made of asa (hemp) for warps and cotton for wefts. It has letters as "Kongo-Zao-Daigongen" which is the main buddha in Kinpusen-ji in Nara. In excellent condition...

Beautiful woman's juban (short under kimono) made of hand-spun cotton for the body and sleeves. The sleeves have silk crepe with check pateern with yana-mayu(wild silk). It has two kinds of beni-itajime (board-clamped), benibana (safflower) dyed. The collar is silk crepe with yuzen and a bit of embroidery. Kasuri child's kimono, probably remade from woman's kimono. It is hand-woven of asa (hemp) whose wefts as well as warps are hand-plied. It has auspicious kasuri pattern such as turtle, pinre tree, fan etc. It was made in Ohmi in Shiga Pref. near Kyoto. Meiji period (1868~1912) The white cloth is thin wool muslin and has some moth holes, however in excellent condition as awhole. 108cm x 113cm

Yuzenzome figured sik girl's kimono. It has hand drawn Yuzen-zome cranes, bamboos, plum flowers, pine trees which are all auspicious motifs. It has se-mamori (charm) which is made of silk threads in the back. Han-juban made of hand-spun cotton and dyed with benibana (safflower). The dye technique is Beni-itajime which is board-clamp dye. The cloth is folded in 8 layers between two boards which are pattern carved and generally about 12 boards are used to dye about 22m length of cloth. Beni-itajime was mostly dyed in Kyoto until the end of Edo period but it was practiced in other places later. In excellent condition. The second half of the 19th century. 64cm x 72cm
