Asa (choma, ramie) woman's han-juban, a short under kimono. It is probably Echigo-jofu made in Niigata prefecture, which is hand-woven of choma, ramie and both the wefts and warps are hand-plied. It has double kasuri(ikat) pattern whose motifs are phoenix, fan, turtle and plum flower. In excellent condition. Late 19th to early 20th century. 86cm x 65cm

Two tsuno-bukuro which were used for the grain. They are made of asa (hemp) and whose selvedges are diagonally sewn together so that the bag is a bit stretchable. The warps as well as wefts are hand-plied. It has the owner's name and the place in Shiga prefecture. It has some mending stitches with white cotton threads and some stains. Samurai's jinbaori which is worn over armors. The ground cloth is wool fabric called "goro or goro fukuren" which had been imported from western countries such as England or Holland from 16th and 17th centuries. It has patchworked woolen crest "Kuyo-mon" in the back. The front panels are made of silk silver brocade and the lining is printed cotton chintz imported from Europe...

Cotton girl's juban (under kimono) for furisode (formal kimono) with katazome pattern. It is called beni-itajime which is one kind of board-clamped dyeing with benibana (safflower). Benibana was very precious in old days and it was mainly grown in Shonai region in Yamagata prefecture. The last photo shows the process of beni-itajime in old days (Reference source: Yomigaeru Maboroshino Senshoku, published by Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo). Meiji period (1868~1912)...
