This is a beautiful girl's kimono made of hand-woven asa ( hemp ) and dyed with benibana ( safflower ). Benibana was cultivated in Shonai region in old days in Yamagata prefecture in Tohoku district, however it is mainly imported from abroad now. This is a fragment of Edo kosode ( literal meaning is small sleeves ) kimono which is silk crepe with beautiful embroideries. the ground silk crepe as well as embroidery threads are dyed with vegetable dyes. This kosode kimono was worn by a woman in high ranking family. The motifs of the embroideries are chrysanthemums and a sparrow. The ground silk crepe is weak from aging.
