Woman's kimono with "Kogin-sashi" which is embroidery with white cotton thread on indigo dyed hemp. It was made in "Tsugaru" region, now the west part of Aomori prefecture in Tohoku district. This embroidery pattern is named "Kawari yotsu mameko" which means arranged 4 beans. There are nearly 30 patterns of kogin-sashi. It has folded sleeves that means it had long sleeves and worn for special occasion, and then worn for everyday wear with folded sleeves...

Han-juban (short under kimono) made of recycled fragments from old kimono, which are silk crepe with katazome (stencil-dye), yuzen-zome, shibori (tie-dye), plain etc. The lining is hand-spun cotton and benibana (safflower) dyed. The red cloth with spiral pattern in front is thin wool muslin. The sleeves are removed. In good condition but some fragments are thin or damaged and some moth holes in wool muslin. Cotton furoshiki (wrapping cloth) with tsutsugaki poem, family crest and pine tree motifs. The poem is from Man-yo-shu (Collection of ten thousand leaves) which begins as "Aoni-yoshi Nara no miyako no ....) The writer is Ono-no Oyu Asomi who was a court official as well as a poet. He wrote it missing the glamorous Nara city when he was assigned a post in Dazaifu, now in Fukuoka Pref. in north Kyushu around 728 AD (Nara period). It is one of the most well-known poems in Man-yo-shu...

Thick shima-cho, a sample book of cortton shima (stripes) with about 870 fragments. The age is written on the cover "Meiji 3 (1870), however the age of the fragments range from very late Edo (mid 19th century) to Taisho (1920s). Cotton Kurume kasuri futonji with a ship motif. Kurume in Fukuoka Pref. in Kyushu has been one of the main product places of indigo dyed cotton kasuri since late Edo period (early 19th century). It is made of hand-spun cotton that means probably it was made before Meiji 15 (1882) and natural indigo dyed. The last photo and the information are from the book "Ai no Hana Orinasu Kasuri" published by Ai Kobo in 1998. It also has hand-spun cotton and natural indigo dyed lining...
